The Exorcist or the original The Shinning are the best horrors I think. House Of A 1000 Corpses is the best modern horror for me. There will be a new Halloween 'Micheal Myers' coming out next October made by the same guy who made House of a 1000 Corpses. That'll be good, I'm willing to bet.

The new Omen was actually surprisingly good...I was shocked that is was more of a mystery. I also love the movie Dragonfly which hardly anyone has ever heard of...it has Kevin Kostner and Kathleen Bates in it...his wife dies and she speaks to him from beyond the grave and he has to follow clues she is leaving him. It is a little freaky at times and is a great mystery.
As far as horror movies go, the Ring movies were pretty scary and I also really liked Resident Evil, the Saw Movies, Texas Chainsaw Massacre (both). Older movies: Rosemary's Baby, Alien and Halloween are a few great classics.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is not a true story. This was a myth that was created when the movie was originally released to help boost sales (kind of like The Blair Witch Project). It is based on a serial killer (Ed Gein) who skinned his victims - it is also the same person that Buffalo Bill in Silence of the Lambs was based on.

Saw I is probably my most favorite scary movie, my friends were watching it with me when I was watching it for the first time and they were still screaming with me even though they had seen it before! (We had the uncut edition.) Sadly the last thing I can say that I've seen that scared the living daylights out of me was the video game Resident Evil 4... Holy crap... You will have nightmares >_<

My choice is the Final Destination series. I've seen only 1 and 2 but they freak you out. You know someone is going to die but not when it is going to happen. Check the series out if you haven't seen it. It's a little gory at times but overall a good series.
