you have to change the mixed fraction into a improper fraction 6*4+5 = 29 that will be your numerator and 6 will be you denominator the you have to find a common denominator of 6 and 5 that would be 30 so 30 will be the denominator in your answer what ever you do to the bottom you have to do to the top so you would multiply 29*5 and 2*6 and those are your numerators so it would be 145/30 + 12/30 = 157/30 and then you would reduce

First separate the whole and fractional parts (5 + 23 + 5 + 2) + (1/2 + 7/8 +3/4 + 1/4) = 37 3/8 Next find a common denominator for the fraction (8) We'll go ahead and add the whole numbers in this step as well 35 + (4/8 + 7/8 + 6/8 +2/8) Now add the fraction together 35 + 19/8 reduce the fraction to a mixed number (19/8 = 2 3/8) and add it to the whole number 35 + 2 3/8 = 37 3/8

4 5/6 can be converted into a fraction without being mixed. this can be done by multiplying the whole number by the fraction by the denomiator (number at bottom of fraction) and adding the numerator (number at top of fraction).
e.g.
4 5/6
this is equal to:
((4x6)+5)/6 = 29/6

to check this, you can then divide 29 by 6, and find that u get 4 point something and so you take out the 4x6 on from 29, which leaves you with 5.

now you have eliminated the mixed fraction, you can add them together. to do that, you take a look at the denominators of the fractions, in this case, 6 and 5. the rules of maths is that to add fractions together, their denominators MUST be the SAME. because the fractions you have have different denominators, you will have to make them the same by multiplying the numerator and denominator by the same scale factor for the same fraction, making the denominator for the fractions the same.
e.g. 29/6 + 2/5
find the lowest common multiple of BOTH denominator, for this case, 30.
(29x5)/(6x5) + (2x6)/(5x6)
= 145/30 + 12/30
= 157/30
= 5 7/30

you have to convert them to top heavy fractions - this is quite a sensible name as the top has a bigger, 'heavier' value. Then you have to make the denominators the same (the bottom numbers)
your example: 4 5/6 + 2/5

1 = 6/6 so 4 = ?
4 x 6= 24 so 4= 24/6
that's the whole numbers completed now add the 24/6 to the 5/6 which = 29/6
now you have to make the denominators the same

so what goes in to 5 and 6? try 30 - as 5 goes into 30, 6 times and 6 goes into 30, 5 times.

so mutiply the denominators by these to get 30

so you have 29/6 - what do you do to the denominator to get 30? multiply it by 5 (because 5x6=30) but 29/30 isn't right! you need to do the same to the top as what you did to the bottom, so you need to multiply the top by 5 as well - so 29 x 5 = 145, so the whole fraction is 145/30

then you need to change the 2/5's into 30's. So what do you do to the 5 to get 30? multiply it by 6! so 5x6 = 30. remember what you do to the bottom you must do the same for the top.
so you do 2x6= 12
so this fraction is 12/30

now you need to add the result of these two that we have converted.
so, 145/30 + 12/30 = 157/30 (DON'T ADD THE DENOMINATORS THEY STAY THE SAME)
now you need to make this top heavy fraction into a mixed number (what you had before-4 and 5/6)
how many 30's go into 157? 5 lots of 30 go into 157, so in the end you get 5 (as a whole number) and 7/30

so the answer is 5 and 7/30

hopefully this helped it may seem a bit confusing!

You have to use a common denominator first. To do that, multiply the two different denominators in those two fractions - 6 x 5 = 30. Then you have to change the fractions so you can add them. You have to multiply 6 by 5 to get the new denominator, so multiply 5 by 5 to get the new numerator. That changes 5/6 to 25/30. You have to multipy 5 by 6 to get the new denominator, so multiply 2 by 6 to get the new numerator. That changes 2/5 to 12/30. Now, you can add the two fractions. 25/30 + 12/30 = 37/30. Since 30/30 is the same as 1, add 1 to the 4 and you have 7/30 left over; that means that 4 5/6 + 2/5 = 5 7/30. Gee, I hope I did that right!

it is quite simple. to add any fraction, just make the denominators the same by finding the least common denominator to make it easier. e.g. 4 and 5/6 + 2/5

LCD=30
then multiply both numerator and denominator bby a fraction which makes the denominator 30. 4 and 5/6 *5/5 (or 1- so it doesn't change the value) so you get 4 and 25/30

then do the same to 2/5. 2/5*6/6=12/30

now there're compatible because of the LCD.

now just add.

4 and 25/30 + 12/30 = 4 and 37/30

then convert 37/30 into a mixed number = 1 and 7/30

then add that to 4 which was left behind.

4+1 and 7/30 = 5 and 7/30

thats how you do it : find LCD and just add

Take the whole number with the fraction (4 5/6) and multiply the whole number by the denominator - this gives 4 x 6 = 24, than add the numerator (5) to it. This gives 29/6.

This is because 1 is six lots of 1/6, so 4 is four times six lots of 1/6. (OK?)

Then treat in the normal way of adding fractions.

4 and 5/6 4 times 6 plus 5= 29
+ 2/5
---------------------

29/6 + 2/5 Find a common Denominator for 6 and 5. Which is 30 so, 145/30 + 12/30

Then you take 30 devided by 6 which is 5, then take 5 times 29, which is 145. Then take 30 devided by 5 which is 6, 6 times 2 which is 12. So, 145/30 + 12/30= 157/30 or 5 23/30. I hope that helped.

first get rid of the whole number, making it into a fraction.
i.e. 4 5/6
4*6=24+5 = 29/6

then you need to make a common denominator between the 2 base numbers, 6 and 5, which is 30.
Times both top and bottom numbers by the same amount.
(to get the base number 6 to 30, you have to times it by 5, so you do the same to the top number)

29/6
= 145/30

Now for the second fraction:
(to get the base number 5 to 30, you have to times it by 6, so you do the same to the top number)

2/5
= 12/30

Now that they have the same base number, you can add the two top numbers, 145 and 12
= 157/30

You then divide this into whole numbers,
i.e. 5 7/30

Et Voila!

Find the Lowest common denominator (LCD). You need to find a denominator that is divisible by both of your current denominators.

In your case the denominators are 6 and 5. The lowest common denominator for these two is 30. One trick is to multiply the two numbers together though this is harder to do for numbers with larger denominators.

So you want to convert 5/6 to some number of 30ths.
to converts the denominator 6 to 30 you have to multiply it by 5, so do the same with the numerator. 5x5=25

so 5/6 = 25/30

Now do the same for 2/5
to convert the denominator 5 to 30 you have to multiply by 6
so do the same to the numerator 2x6=12

so 2/5 = 12/30

4 25/30 + 12/30 = 5 7/30
