Chances are that you have downloaded a file that you do not have the correct audio codec to play. Without this it cannot undertand what to output. This is a way of ensuring that file sizes remain small but there are many variations.

The easiest way to see if you have the codec required is to use an application like MediaInfo. This will list the required Video Codec (which you have) and audio codec (which you dont)

Once you know the codec you need then it is fairly simple to get it running.

One of the best all purpose codec collections is K-Lite codec pack. This contains pretty much anything you will need to play back all kinds of video and audio files.

try system restore to when your sure the sound was working.
it may not work, but try, and than see if it's a problem that happens when playing dvd's is the issue. in that case see what can be done with that. I would like to find out about that, too, if it is a sound-dvd

Do you get any sound out of your PC ?
No - Check speaker cable, power to speakers, etc...

Go to Start > Run, type sndvol32
Check you haven't pressed mute on anything

Failing that, reboot and cross fingers
