Did your mechanic check your CV joints? Is it more rattle-y when you make turns? You should look at the boots around the coils behind your front tires for leakage -- they can crack, lose lubricant and cause a rattle. Ultimately they need to be replaced.

There is a TSB on the steering shaft u-joint adjustment position. Even with hte updated shaft and lubricant it can still make noise if positioned to high on an acute angle when turning. There is also the possibility that the upper steering rack bearing is broken or stabilizer links ect. But if it sounds a bit different since the shaft was replaced have them look at again or take it to another shop.
