It would've helped to know where you were coming from. But it's ok, I suppose I would presume that my answerers would be psychic too.

Take the blue train. Or exit San Bruno Ave off the 101.

"San Francisco International Airport’s Rental Car Center allows travelers to pick up and drop off rental cars at one convenient, central location. Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, National and Thrifty car rental counters are located on the fourth floor of the SFO Rental Car Center.

A number of off-Airport rental car agencies are served by free shuttle service from the SFO Rental Car Center. Shuttles for ABC, Airport, City, Fox and Payless rental car companies stop at the south curb of the Rental Car Center upon passenger request.

To access the Rental Car Center from the Airport terminals, take the AirTrain Blue Line. AirTrain, SFO’s fully automated people mover system, operates 24 hours every day and provides convenient and frequent service throughout SFO. AirTrain stations are located in all terminals, parking garages, the Rental Car Center and SFO’s BART station."

The car rental desks are actually located in a satellite terminal far away from the departure gates. You'll have to take the AirTrain on arrival in the main terminals (1-4).

There's a light rail service and it's one of the stops on that. Physically it's a mile or so north of the terminals on the side of US101. The light rail exits right into the hall with the rental desks.
