Sure you can! You can even install your laminate flooring on top of the old carpet. This gives the laminate floor a "natural" bounce.

You should not use carpet pad under a laminate floor, because it will act as a spring board, and will be very bouncy, and will cause the locking mechanism on the laminate floor to break, or come apart.... laminate underlay does not come in strips, you can buy rolls of it, just like carpet pad.. but for your sake don't use carpet pad as an underlayment for laminate flooring, it will cause you more problems.. if you are putting it on a concrete floor, then you will have to put plastic down, then the laminate pad.. on wooden subfloors just use laminate pad.. Edit: the cardboard laminate underlay type is not very good, because it doesnt stick to the floor, or the laminate, and the floor could shift.. I recommend the rubber/plastic foam, but its anywhere from 35-60 dollars for 50 sq. ft. of it... but if you are on a budget, use the regular plastic foam, which you can get for about 25 dollars, and it is 300 sq. ft. you will see it in the aisle where you got the laminate, or if you ordered it through a small business, ask them what underlayment they normally use. No, No, No and NO!

Get down to Wick's or Floors R Us etc and buy the correct underlay boards or if your short of money buy those roll's of foam underlay which is specifically made to be used in conjunction for laminate floors.

If you shelled out money for the laminate boards why not do it right in the first place.

There are many different types of underlay, if it's foam it will be fine but if it's rubber then it will just disintegrate over time. It can be beneficial as laminate is a floating floor which means it doesn't fit snugly to the floor and underlay can help it to "breath" (let air circulate under it)

I have been remodeling houses for six years now and I always do all the work myself. I would suggest that you not put down carpet padding beneath your laminate. How would you get your laminate flooring to stay down? Plus, it would make it a lot easier for anything sharp to puncture through your new floor. If you're looking for a sheet type flooring that is soft for your feet, try what they call floating laminate. It is a flexible type laminate that has a foam backing on it. It comes in varying thicknesses of foam, so you can use what feels best under your feet. Also, it is a breeze to put down...no glue involved. You use a special inexpensive double-sided tape around the edges. Extremely easy to do and it looks beautiful afterward, it doesn't have that yucky glossy look to it like regular linoleum has. Also, it's relatively inexpensive.

Don't do it . Use the standard laminate floor underlay. If you purchased your flooring recently, it may have the backing pre-attached. The carpet underlay may save you money, but what good is that if your floor is spongey and you are not happy with the job. When it comes to home improvements, don't cheap out.

you can, but will probably be too bouncy - there are 3 choices of underlay for laminate flooring - suggest you pay a visit to the supplier and decide whats best for you. Do the job right - do it once !!!!

I answered this very question a month ago. NO WAY JOSE.
It would get musty and it is too thick. buy the proper underlay, and go for the good stuff not the light foam. ( it curls up and does its own thing, like a shopping trolley)
