Next year islamic new year (20.01.2007) falls on a Saturday, but because this is the weekend, there might be chances for another day off. we will know shortly before that by the media. but only for the goverment sector.

Here in Turkey, there is no public holiday to mark the Islamic New Year. In Kuwait, however, I note that schools and businesses will close on 20th January 2007 in observance of the year and it's my understanding that most other countries where Islam is the main religion will do the same; it is only a one-day holiday. Shi'a Moslems, however, have a public holiday called 'Ashura' that will be taken on 30th Jan 2007 to commemorate the martyrdom of the Prophet's grandson: Sayyid Hussain

We don't get anything for it in Britain. I only wish we did - the more holidays the better!
