If what you are doing is not fun, it is time to move on to something else! This is an old adage, but still appropriate today. Have you ever heard an umpire at a baseball game start off by calling for "Work Ball"? No, they will call "Play Ball".
Today’s young people and many others in business will actually go through a number of jobs in their carriers. I have met a lot of people who are doing very different things today than they did even five years ago. The field I am in today (and for the last twenty five years) was not something that I started looking for. It developed over a number of years doing any number of things while in grade school, high school, college, masters and even a Ph.D.! I have been working ever since I was old enough to push a lawn mower.
Today, I call myself a Business Improvement Coach as my handle may give you some idea of what I do. I help individuals and companies make more money and stay in business.
For people today - one advice I have is to find something you love to do so much that you would do it even if you did not get paid. If you approach business this way and manager your cash flow, you should be able to do very well on the income scale. Six figures should be a minimum!!!
To start looking in more detail at what you might want to do in your career - go to you local library and look for a set of books called the Encyclopedia of Associations (published by Gale Research, however, their website does NOT give the same information unless you pay them). There should be three books: the first book list thousands of professional organizations all over the USA (there is another set for international). Note: a professional association is somewhat similar to a fraternity or sorority in college. But after you get out of college, they call them professional organizations/associations. These are groups of like minded individuals who come together to talk/work/etc in a particular topic or field.
Look up any word of anything that you might think would be fun. Once you find the word, there should be a series of numbers that relate to the other two books.
Look up the code number and get the contact information for that group. You should ask them for: membership information (this usually tells you a little more about them), a copy of their publications catalog (this give any number of reference that they use in that field), their web site address (for further reading) and if there are any local groups in your area that you might be able to attend their meetings.
In my early years, I was a member of over 15 of these groups at one time and have joined over 30 during my working career.
It is said that you success in the future will depend on two things: the things that you read and the people that you meet. I will confirm this with my own career as I have had the privilege to meet many of the top guru's in my field over the years and am now considered on of the top people myself.
Good Luck - life can be a challenge, but you can make it enjoyable! If you are thrown lemons, make lemonade :-)
Some of the professional groups that I us regularly are listed below

I own a taxicab company. I drive people all around Amarillo and the Texas Panhandle. Yes, it's fun. I have had such people as James Earl Jones, Elton John, Henry Kissinger, Bill Cosby, and many other famous people get into my cabs. They all need to go somewhere, and I am there to take them to their destinations. My average yearly income for my car alone is over 72,000...Not bad for a guy who won't get a real job, eh?

All careersr may also be "a laugh careers" , relying to your suggestion of "a laugh", and task-delight. Does feeding lions at zoo sound likea a laugh profession?( Only the pay could now not be that well and the one danger of merchandising there might be , feeding the elephants?) Or fitting a kind of snake wranglers at animal planet? Game layout? Actor?
