I am confused about the units that represent 1 and 500 ( cm, mm, meters?)

1cm=500cm=5m
1:500 scale means on themap1cm=500cm on the field
so 1cm=500cm
you know100cm=1m
so 500 cm=5m

it can denote anything actually, 1 unit on map would represent 500 of the same unit of measure used, 1 cm would represent 500 cm (5m) in reality.

if the map says simply '1:500' scale than you can use any units and one of those units measured on a map will equal 500 of that same unit in the real world.

You are mixing oranges with apples. 1:500 is a scale, meaning that anything (meters, centimeters, miles, feet, inches, etc) which is represented on such scale IS REDUCED by 500 times.
Got it? Like on a road map.

Probably it means that each cm of the drawing is equivalent to 500cm (5m) in real size.
