what is better a ton of content and a lower keyword density or a higher keyword density with a decent amount of content???

Ugh, that's a toughie. I guess it just depends. If you have content, I think that high content with reduced keyword density would be effective -- but if you lack the content, then I think that increasing the keyword density would work to compensate for the lower content. It depends upon what you are trying to attract people to: what your site is about, visual pics. or more word-based content, too. If you've the time and system, you could try one for a week and then switch and see if there is a difference.
