I plan an outing for my mother and I every year for her birthday. She loves to travel and is alway complaining that she doesn't get to see me enough, so I usually plan a weekend trip for the two of us.

I take my mom out for Chinese food and then we usually go to the movies. But if you're strapped for time, get her an old movie on DVD. My mom loves Doris Day, I would also suggest Audrey Hepburn. Maybe make a gift basket and put some microwave popcorn and her other favorite movie snacks and put it in a bowl that she can put the popcorn in.

Your time. Spend time with her. Take her out to eat, to a movie, or shopping. Better yet cook a meal for her then give her your undivided attention. It will be a gift for you as well as for her.

Take her shopping for a new outfit and then out to eat. Spending the time together will probably mean more to her than you realize!!

If you've got some money....something that would remind her of you such as a pendant with your name or photo inside. If you don't have the money....give her a day of rest and volunteer to do as she needs for the day!
