64 is a special number....
start from 1 and keep doubling... you will end up at 64 in 6 steps (ie. the seventh number, seven being special); hence, it has 7 factors (1,2,4,8,16,32,64)
64 is also a square (8^2) and a cube (4^3); subtracting it from another square number, 100, results in a square (36)

I think it goes back to some game show where the value of each question doubled starting at $1000 until you got to the $64,000 question. There were seven questions in the series. 1,2,4,8,16,32,64 is the series.
This has been corrupted and inflated a bit to $64M.
It's synonymous with the "ultimate question"
