I have to read a book and write a summary type thing about it for my psychology class, but I do not know of any good books that have a mental illness as a part of it for the main character. If anyone can help that would be GREAT!!!!

Thank you

Sybil is an excellent story about a woman with multiple personality disorder. It would be great for a school project. It's an easy read, it's not super long, and it's very interesting.

Not mental illness per se, but the book "Flowers for Algernon" features a main character, Charlie Gordon, who suffers from mental retardation. Charlie has experimental surgery that results in his changing from retarded to super-genius. It's a super book.

Also not a main character, but in the book "To Kill a Mockingbird," the character Boo Radley is obviously suffering from some sort of mental illness.

Several of the characters in Tenessee Williams' plays suffer from depression or other mental illnesses. William Faulkner also deals somewhat with mental illnesses in some of his books.

"One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" is a book that deals with a mentally-ill main character.

Non-fictional, but any biography that deals with actress Francis Farmer will take you into the world of mental illness. Also any biography of Vivian Leigh, the actress who played Scarlet O' Hara in "Gone With the Wind;" she suffered from bipolar mood disorder. Patty Duke Aston has also written about her battles with bipolar mood disorder. "A Beautiful Mind," the book, deals with the battles mathematician John Nash faced with schizophrenia.

The Sound and The Fury by William Faulkner

The story is told from the perspective of a mentally challenged child. It's actually a brilliant read!
