Italy has had a history of Fascism. WWII found them aligned with the Nazis. But most Italians are not racists. Many wealthy Italians may have this viewpoint. It could be it was started in the roots of the Mafia who gained wealth and influence. But this is not the main reason. Rome had this same attitude toward other foreign nations after all they had conquered most of these nations including Gaul which is the South of France. One reason they felt superior was that they had built aqueducts throughout Rome. This allowed them to control water and have baths as well as drinking water. It made them cleaner, healthier, smarter, and able to grow crops. It allowed them to control their environment. They were better able to feed their soldiers.
This made them feel superior and fostered racism against other cultures who seemed primitive,
This has carried on through out the world but on the whole I do not feel most Italians are racist.

I haven't been there, but I've heard that they aren't so racist as sexist. Mostly from the guys though, so maybe a black guy would think that they are racist because he is not a woman. If he was a woman though, I might hear from her that Italian men always seemed to be trying to touch her in ways that would make Arnold Schwartzenegger blush. Anyhow, I heard from all the women that I know that have visited Italy that they were groped repeatedly... Although, now that I think about it... Were they complaining?? There's got to be some reason those women wanted to go to Italy, right?

A nation cannot be racist. People can be racist, but it takes many people to make up a nation, and to say "Italy is racist" would be unfair to the many NON-racist Italians. And even if a government engages in racist actions, the populace as a whole may not necessarily support those actions.
Having said that, yes, many Italians and Europeans as a whole tend to be more resistant to outside cultures and races, and it is more socially permissible to express racist or sexist remarks there than it would be in the U.S.

There is a growing nationalist movement all over Europe, in the UK, Spain, Germany, Russia and of course Italy. Racism is growing in Italy with the nationalist movement. But, is Italy more racist than say my country, the US? No. But, I would be wary if I were a minority going to any place in Europe these days.

the thing is there is a difference that people of today confuse .... if you don't like a certain race you are labelled a racist straight away which is not the case . a racist is someone who hates everything that is not from there country and does not care about colour or creed . i think the word you are looking for is prejudice as they do tend to dislike ( africans ) but not British dutch or french blacks so there are not colour prejudice there .. i would think that the east of europe is far more prejudice than Italy ... but again name a person that does not carry a prejudice ... i would like to think there is no such thing as a racist in this day and age ....

Mainly it's just the extremists who hit the headlines, but isn't it like that everywhere? A lot of people are fascist in England and America too.
