If there had been building work in the past, any debris may have been dumped in the garden and covered over, either by builders or a DIYer. It could be anything. When I was digging up my present garden, I found a couple of old metal water cisterns, lengths of rusty piping and lots of rusty nails (having read the question about the hydrangea changing colour, me thinks the rusty nails are serving a useful function ...).

Well I think that is some kind of metal that was used like hundreds of years ago when you werent living in your house yet so it just got stuck underground and when you dug to make a wall in your garden maybe you found it.

I agree with the other chap, it is possibly a metal rusty dirty thing, however there is a possibility it could also be a Klingon Battle ship so i would tread very carefully indeed.

Well going by your very accurate description I suspect that it could be a metal rusty dirty thing.

My guesses.. a pet coffin, a bomb, a money stash, a tool that accidentally got buried, a murder weapon. How big is it? What shape?
