The closest cities to San Diego are probably the ones that border the City of San Diego:
along the northern edge of San Diego: Del Mar, Solana Beach, Escondido.
along the eastern edge: Poway, Santee, El Cajon, La Mesa, and Lemon Grove.
and along the souther edge: Coronado, Imperial Beach, National City, Chula Vista, and across the border: Tijuana.
-- but of the 3 other cities you mentioned (Valencia, Santa Clara and Vallejo) -
Valencia is north of Los Angeles.
Santa Clara is near San Jose, at the south end of the Bay Area
Vallejo is in the northeast corner of the Bay Area.
Since San Diego is about 100 miles south of LA, the closest city of those three is Valencia, then Santa Clara, and finally Vallejo.

Coranado!! I lived there for three years in Lemon Grove. Many cities surround San Diego. Mission Valley and Pacific Beach too. There are many more. I love them all. If you live there you most likely will feel the same. There is a lot of entertainment such as the gaslamp district, Balboa Park, Zoo much more including the beach!! I sure miss it!!!!!

I live in Newport Beach which is like 80 miles north of SD... I guess San Juan Capistrano is closest... not totally sure. There's tons of small towns around SD but the largest city closest to SD is LA which is about 130 miles north. Hope that helps.

Well if your talking about Ontario, California (not Canada) that is the closest. It is followed by Bakersfield, then San Jose.
