Are you on friendster? Well you can try it (if you're not) at www.friendster.com, it's very useful to trace a network of ex-colleagues and friends by keying in their emails in its search button. And yes, the service is free. You can then keep in touch with them for as long as you like, and in case it doesn't work for you, Friendster gives you the option to cancel your account with them.
Another 'longer route' would be starting a 'blog' about it, and spread the link through your friends, but try making it interesting so when they visit your page, there's also other stuff to read about. It's better to forward a link than an email asking about to trace a friend as too many words may be a turn-off for a lot of people nowadays. A mild intro with the link would do just fine.
I can't think of other ways at the moment but I wish you the best of luck in searching for your old friend. Sorry if you've already tried the above methods and didn't work out for you...

Google the name along with the last known residential location. I found an old high school friend this way.

If you know his/her parents names, parents don't often move. Or possibly you could find mutual friends who might have info. If you knew where he/she attended highschool, the class president would have a current list of names for reunions, etc. myspace.com is also an option...sign up and do a school search.
