A force is something that causes a mass to accelerate. Gravity definitely does do this. Therefore, it's a force.
If you're asking the much more esoteric question of 'why should mass attract each other in the first place', then I'm not sure anyone can really answer that question satisfactorily. There are some physicists who theorize that the kind of forces we have in the universe were caused by the way in which it first formed. But not having any other universes around for comparison, this is mostly just theory.

Unlike the others I will tell you that force is anything that acts upon something else, either by transference, potential or kinetic variant. Gravity is the action of space being curved around the earth as it is around all bodies in space. This causes all things that are of smaller mass to move toward or away from it as proportion to accelerated action. Gravity is a weak force because it can be acted upon and against so easily. Example you drop a ball it hits the ground. In this case the ball is stopped by striking the ground rather than continuing to move right though the earth. Unlike atomic particals that would in many case go right through.

A very basic question. Why should gravity be a force? In other words you are asking why should there be attraction between two masses. The way to answer this is as follows. Sir Issac Newton conceived of this idea.He propounded his theory. This was practically verified and the scientific community accepted the "Newton's law of universal gravitation".In fact this is the process through which every new discovery or a theory has to be validated.

Well, if you drop your head on the floor or someone punchs you on the head is more or less the same effect. Eh? Can you hear me? How many fingers do you see?
