When I first got him, he didn't bite. But ever since he tried to escape, when I put my hand in the cage, he'll sniff it and eventually bite it. He didn't used to do this before. What can I do?

Make sure you are washing you hands before picking him up (may be smelling) and give him plenty to chew on before you pick him up. He may be a bit startled when you put your hand into the cage, so try petting him and giving him treats for a few minutes before you pick him up.

If your hamster is sniffing your hand and then biting, it sounds like he is doing this because he smells something on your hands. Before putting your hands anywhere near your hamster, make sure to wash your hands first. Doing this will make sure any scent of food is gone. Also, I am not sure if you are putting your hands in his cage while he is sleeping or not. If you are make sure you wake him up by talking to him first otherwise I guarantee will you get bite quite often

Feeding treats out of your hands is fine, but your hamster may learn that your hand reminds him of the treats from the previous times, and try to bite. This can become abad habit for his as well.

The tip on making sure your hands are clean of anything that smells of food or salt is a good one. I'ld take a step further and leave a thin layer of soap on my hands so he gets a mouthful of something nasty if he bites. I worked in the pet section of a feed and seed store years ago and was expected, as a part of my job, to get new shipments ready for sale. My fingers resembled pin cushions until I used this technique. My customers were very happy with hamsters who had been handled gently but had an aversion to tasting fingers.
By the way, an ointment made of tea tree oil and lavender oil works great to prevent infection and speed healing of bites, available at nutrition and health food stores.

I have to hamsters(escape artist if I may add). There Really nothing you can do about them biting you. Just make sure you give them plenty of chew chips so that they can keep their teeth trimmed done and healthy.
My hamsters were nice and eventaully they will start to bite...There not really people kind of animals.

Hamsters bite - that is just typical of the species. Make sure your hands are washed with soap before handling him - he may smell food on them.

You can't do anything about it. Try not to startle it. Hamster's vision is very bad, and they rely on their nose. Make sure you wash your hands before handling it so your hands don't smell like food. Other than that...there's not much you can do.

Like a snake, you probably feed it in it's cage so everything else including your hand, that goes in must be food. It's an animal, small brain.

Hamsters are poor sighted and he may think you are food. Don't put your hand in. Pick him up and let him get used to your affection. If he is nervous, he will get used to you.
