They have to leave so if the movie makes enough money they can make another movie for more money. If they did not leave the door open for a sequel, then how could they explain a sequel? Money talks and well, I think you know the rest.

They want the audience to want a sequel. If they most definetely killed of a character, and there was a strong demand for a sequel how would you explain it. In the Aliens saga, Ripley got painted into a corner and the series has become unwatchable.
