Eleanor Roosevelt was the wife of FDR and the first, First Lady to openly express her own political views and she backed that up by being actively associated with domestic programs and institutions that promoted Civil Rights and care for the underprivileged! No first lady sense has shown as much concern for the humanities!

Elanor Roosevelt pretty much drafted the U.N. Charter on Human Rights by herself. Not that anybody in the west cares about that wonderful document any more.
