look in "device manager" to see if it says the sound card (multimedia) is working ok). If everything's working ok, then there should be no colored (either yellor or red or blue) exclamation marks or question marks that show up in Device Manager.
to get to Device Manager, right-mouse-click on "My Computer" (probably in the upper left corner of your desktop), and on the menu that comes up, click on "properties" (bottom choice), and then from the tabs along the top of the window that comes up, click "device Manager"
If it says everything is ok, then maybe you have the plug that comes from the speakers going into the wrong hole in the back or something, or the speakers might be bad. .
try other speakers, etc. . and if all else fails, (including trying to replace the drivers (by downloading the latest ones from the manufacturers site and installing them), then go get a new sound card and put that in (they aren't that much). . make sure it says it's compatible w/ Windows 98, tho (not just Windows 98 SE, cause that's a separate compatability type)
