First you need to pick a position. Persuasive writing involves swaying the reader's mind to a specific position. Then you show that the pros outweigh the cons. Example it would be easier for students to understand modern literary works because they are written in familiar language. However, works like Dickens's, Shakespeare, Melville and others add a depth, and perspective to literature that is worth the effort to understand and learn from them. Many of these works have fantastic character's, plots and stories that serve to enrich the mind and invigorate the imagination. Students who plan on becoming English majors in college will be grossly unprepared for the classics if they are not exposed to them earlier. It also exposes the student to the way language and literature have developed historically as well as give us a glimpse of how live was in the past or how our present was envisioned in the past.

Just think about from what position you want to come from and why you believe it is the right position and you will have the basis for your persuasive argument.

Pick a position.

My position would be to include both, in order to give the students a well-rounded view of the world. The older classics were often more thought-provoking and had a lot more depth than many modern works. They wrote with a lot more description and detail. I'm speaking in generalities and there are exceptions to these things.

Much of our modern language was coined by writers of old. For example, young people today use the phrase "I'll put that on my life." Read Othello by Shakespeare to know where that came from and what it means.

Older writings contain a lot of the history and culture of people over time. Greater understanding is achieved. We are the product of the past and writers of the past allow us to explore where we came from.

Again, both modern and historical works should be included.

Pros could be that the more modern literature may be easier for young ones to comprehend. It may relate to life as they know it today.

Cons could be that students should learn from all cultures, ancient and modern in order to be well-rounded individuals. To exclude literature produced by older societies would shelter the children from the history and literature and the history of the world.

Writing a Persuasive Essay

In a persuasive essay you are going to try to convince the reader that your point of view is best. To accomplish this, you must chose a topic which is clear and to the point and one which has more than one side that can be debated. It is important that you understand the other sides of the position so that you can give strong reasons why your way is best. In your essay, you will only present one side.

Like all kinds of five paragraph essays, there is a specific format to be followed.

Definition: Persuasive writing works to convince the reader that a point of view is valid or persuades the reader to take specific action. It is based on a topic that is limited in scope, manageable, and debatable; a topic about which there could be more than one point of view.

Persuasive writing expresses a writer's opinion. The goal of persuasioon is to make an audience change its opion and, perhaps, take action. Effective persuasive writing uses strong, relevant evidence to support its claims. This kind of writing often requires careful research, organization, and attention to language.
