This may sound odd, but exercising during your period will decrease the pain.

A nice warm heating pad to the lower abdomen, a hot bath, Motrin or Naproxen Sodium- sold over the counter as Aleve, or in generic form, gentle massage of the lower abdomen and normal physical activity as much as possible all help with period cramps. You can try Pamprin or Midol, and see if those will work for you as well. If the pain is making you ill, you can certainly see a doctor for prescription strength medications, or even look into birth control pills which help in cases where the pain is severe. If the periods are painful and heavy, you could have pain from other causes than the usual cramping which would need to be treated. Periods don't have to be painful.
Also watch the diet. Caffeine seems to irritate things, as does a high intact of salt because they cause bloating and water retention- both can make you feel more miserable.

Drink more milk (helps a lot in some). Take an Advil (Ibuprofen) a day or two before your period and during ( before the pain becomes unbearable). Try and do some exercise (even a short walk) or curl up in the fetal position with a hot water bottle around the painful area helps too.
