Apparently you have visited a site that was not trustworthy, yeah - and how do you know until you get there, right! Sounds like a program called Gator that i had fun with.
I believe Adaware is a free program that you can download and then scan your computer. Should isolate and eliminate your problem.
Just type Adaware into your search engine.

Bear Share. you can get the free version or pay for the professional version. I like it better than all the others out there. You can even get some movies and TV shows. It is very user friendly unlike some of the ones I have been on

download 2 good spyware programs like spybot adaware or avg antispyware update them and your antivirus and run them in safe mode (adaware and spybot cannot be run at the same time and you need to delete the backup files each creates or you will have a mess)

go to:
http://www.techguy.org
click on the link near the top that says "signup" and then create a username and password (so you can login). .
and then login and click on "forums", and then on the forums page, scroll down to "security", and in the security forum, create on "create a new thread", or "start new thread" or whatever it says, and then in that new thread post your problem (tell them your problem), and then post it and then someone will answer back in the forum soon and give you instructions on how to find out the problem and fix it. .
this is all free, and these people really know their stuff. .
good luck and God bless you.

add to your HOSTS file
do a search for "HOSTS" (might be read only)
open it and add
popcorn.net 127.0.0.1
now when that site tries to load it will hit a dead end. (still pop up but no page displayed.)
This is only a temp solution until you find the underlying cause.
