They can have either, especially as both have been dead for decades.
Perhaps, someone new would help.
Your first answerrer raises an even bizarrer concept of asking you to speak to an 'older' Chinese person regarding Lao-tse, Confucius et al, and that Chinese person would have to be about 4000 years old. Good luck in finding one that old, but the current communist government does stay within the confines of Confucian guidance on the behaviour of the state. As for Lao, well that's the shaolins job.

Fundamentally there is not much difference between Mao and Gandhi, as I have studied both of them. Excepting for ahimsa, they seem to be agreeing on the philosophy that the individual should sub serve the society. The dignity of labour and emphasis on hard life and hard labour are strikingly similar. In the modern India, where people have become tired of all the political parties, there is one party which still remains to be tested at the Centre. The Communist Part of India (Marxist). Their leaders are by far the least corrupt, and the idealistic, the principled. I wish the Communists are voted to power in the Centre.

Ask an elder Chinese person what they think of Lao Tzu and Confucius, and you'll have your answer.

My would-be editor:
Traditional Chinese belief is predicated on the "Eternal Way".
This was the teaching of Confucius, and was banned by Mao's Cultural Revolution.in favor of Lao Tzu.

History is the ageless giver of fortune;
be so fortunate as to accept what it offers.

India is great with Gandhi. Do not be one of those who think that the grass is always greener at the other side of the fence.
