People take the easy way out of everything. Hahaha.
If you can own just 3 material possessions, the answer includes a million dollars. If you only had 3 wishes, it includes ten more wishes. This is not a loop hole, this is a childish answer!

Now let me rebut some other answers.
You would not need to own a book, as you can go to the library and freely take out and read books there. A woman is not a material possession. Food, bathroom, and water can be recieved in other places, and if you were to own a piece of food or gallon of water, it would run out. You don't need a car if you live in a small town or a city, because people most often walk.

A robe, a blanket and a beggar's bowl. Centuries of experience have shown that this is the bare minimum a person needs to survive. Actually, no, a bowl is not necessary. You can eat out of your palms. And in a hot climate, neither is a blanket. As for a robe, some Shaivite sadhus (holy men) even go without a robe. They are called the "sky-clad"... So you see, no need for anything. That's in theory.
But in real life, I personally would have a bank account in my name, a bank card to take the money out, and something to wear when I'm going to the bank to get the money to buy all the rest of the things ;)

The first think I thought of that I would not like to be without again is transportation...a car. I could live in my car if things were desperate and I could drive away from the situation that kept me homeless and unemployed.

The next thing would be clothes to dress up to look for employment and to protect against cold. I think blankets and pillows could be in this category too.

Because I don't consider food a possession as it is a consumable, I won't put that in my list but it is a necessity...that and a place to use the restroom...but those aren't possessions soo....

I'll say my laptop computer with Internet connection and skype phone service and printer. In short...car, clothes, computer for possessions.

Food, bathroom facilities, water and air but consumables don't count as possessions as they belong to all of us. (Thankfully, I don't have to add medication to my list as I'm healthy!)

Its good to think about this stuff. I think the best way to ask this question is...If you lost everything and could only ask for three things back, what would they be? It would cut out the clever but frivolous answer like $1,000,000,000. The rule here could be you can't ask for something you don't all ready own. It would created deeper thought.

My car, my guitar and a pen (I'll write on my hand if I need to!)

Because then I could go anywhere, including the bar where I sing. I could continue to play guitar & write songs. If I could only pick one thing it would be my guitar. Right now singing is most important to me. I can sleep on the ground. I can walk. I can try to memorize my lyrics & chords without writing them down.

Good thing I don't have to limit myself to these! I also like to paint. That would have taken up all 3: canvas, paint, brush!

Bible-not because I am that religious, but because I love to read and there is so much to read and it seems that each time one reads it there is something new to ponder.

A full lenght cape- to cover my body in the winter and during the seasons and to sleep upon. Seeming how I wouldn't have a bed.

A roll of tp. because I couldn't bear the thought of being without something to ........well I think you understand this one.

A pen, A journal and a Refrigerator.
Well a pen and journal so that I can immortalize my words. And a fridge because I just can't imagine living without ice or cold beer.
