Rumsfield fell on his spear because Bush is failing as a President and the Republicans lost power because of it. The election was no big suprise to the GOP they knew they were going down in flames.

Rumsfeld was fired because he had lost respect of the military. The Generals, the military news papers, books about his lack of post-invasion planning all meant that he could not effectively lead the military any more. If he had stayed, it would have continued to spiral down, completely killing the Republicans' chances in 2008 (worse than what happened on Tuesday).

think of it from bush's point of view . he knew for a fact rumsfeld would have been terminated by the democrats that are now in power . Bush did this fast so he could atleast pick his replacement instead of a cut and run replacement the dems would have picked , sure the senate has to make the final decision but bush played this situation very well and will get what he wants .

I guess he did cut and run from Rumsfeld. And he didn't stay the course either. By now most people realize those were just catch phrases.

Rumsfeld "resigned" alright, after the prez handed him his hat. He was seen as a political liability.

Maybe he was burned out. It's been a tough 6 years & he's over 70. Obviously, this had been planned, otherwise Bush wouldn't have been able to name a succesor so quickly.

1 - He was fired.

2 - In other words, no.

3 - And your point is what, that politicians lie, change their minds, and otherwise tack into the wind when necessary? Grow up!

the army has been inquiring for his removing for an prolonged time. initially Bush refused to hearken to them. Now, after the election he acceeded to their demands. i'm looking forward to the return of the democracy. The monarchy of King George has been usurped!
