A Bang Before You Sleep?
The bang you may hear before falling asleep may be the well known phenomenon among the spiritually knowledgeable. The pineal gland may close the circuit int he brain, after relaxing and gliding into the Alpha State (scentifically measurable, slowed brain waves). Thepineal is the root of the so-called Third Eye, which is activated by the closed circuit. This closing of the circuit can cause us to hear a loud bang as if from a shot or similar. When the Third Eye, one of our 7 main Chakras, stays mainly open and the circuit can flow freely, the bang will rarely be heard.
When you have a cat or dog in the room and consciously hear the spiritual bang, the animal will not move its ears from the bang you hear. This is a sign that it is an inner bang, not a physical event.
There is much our schools do not teach us, but it is all in books. We only have to rediscover the ancient knowledge.
A good book to read would be Secrets of Chinese Meditation by Lu K'Uang Yu. May be as a second hand book (Internet, Amazon, Barnes and Noble). The second part of the book is full of practical experiences with our spiritual powers.
Happy study.

In reading up on various meditation practices, I have encountered folks describing a rather loud "popping" sound as the mind seperates from the body....
That strange, fleeting, surreal period right between sleep and wake is the Theta state of consciousness - prime time for OOBs and astral projection

YES . It is absolutely the weirdest thing. I think it's just the body relaxing right as you go to sleep and somehow the crossing over to the sleep mode gets jostled a bit. Then BANG ! Kind of like those dreams a person gets just as they're falling asleep, where they are falling and bounce.

This happens to me as I am dozing off in front of the TV at night. however, I usually think something has fallen. I'll be startled awake by some loud noise, then feel the need to investigate. That's when i find nothing out of the ordinary. Yet, i am convinced I heard something.
