This question can not be answered sitting safely on a chair. We never know how we will act in a desperate situation, instinct and the will to live most likely will determine our action in this circumstance.

If you had access to a boat, get in it and get out as far as you can before the Tsunami hit. Stories about fisherman who were 1/2 mile out to sea indicated that they just experienced an up and down bob and nothing more.

either find a very tall building that looks like it would survive the impact - and climb to the top....or find something that would float, like a large plank of wood or plastic and try to ride it out.
