Area 51 is the Groom Lake dry lake bed. It is easily visible on Google Earth, but not much can be seen. Since satellite orbits are well-known, the Air Force simply doesn't operate when a satellite is close enough to take pictures. Several F-16s are visible, as are larger commuter aircraft, and a few Boeing 737s. The runways on the lakebed look well-kept, so the base is still functional, despite what the Air Force says.

Yes, it's also called the "Groom Lake Facility"

It was so secret that it's existance wasn't offically recognized by the government until a lawsuit and USGS photograph propted the government to "sign it in" to recognition.

The lawsuit was due to the death of a woman's husband who worked at the base. They were illegally burning toxic chemicals there since their non-existant status exepted them from EPA standards, and her husband died from chemical exposure.

The area around Area 51 is off limits and the government (perhaps illegally) monitors the public land around it.

Every government needs it's secret bases though.

There is a super-secret base in the Nevada desert, which is called "Area 51." This may not be it's official name.

Check it out on google maps: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=area+51&ie=UTF8&z=13&ll=37.243448,-115.81152&spn=0.100851,0.174408&t=k&om=1&iwloc=addr
