The Common Bugloss (Anchusa officinalis) is considered a noxious weed because of its aggressive growth. These plants can be highly destructive , competitive and difficult to control. The Common Bugloss is a deep taprooted perennial in the Borage Family, with hairy, angular stems growing to 24 inches tall. The lance-shaped fleshy leaves are covered with stiff hairs. The flowers are deep purple to blue with white centres. The flower stems are at first coiled like a fiddleneck, straighten out as each bud opens. Each flower produces 4 seeds. Bugloss prefers dry, sandy to gravelly soils. Average seed production is in excess if 900 seeds per plant. Common Bugloss is sometimes confused with blueweed (Echium vulgare)
