Try finding out why they feel the need to hang with gang members. A lot of kids who join gangs are using that as a supplement for family. They are lacking the support they need so they turn to this disfunctional support group. Or maybe this is a kid with no troubles who simply started hanging out with the wrong people and feels pressured to be like them. Either way it may be good to encourage some extracurricular activities like sports or hobbies to occupy their time. If the problem is the latter, try to find ways to discourage them hanging out with bad influences. Try to initiate more time together as a family, try to introduce other teens that you know are not involved in gangs. Or put them to work if you cannot find other ways to occupy their time, ask a friend or coworker to hire them part time, or you could force them to get a job by making them pay for their own things. I am not sure how desperate the situation has become; but it is painfully obvious in every gang movie, documentary or hollywood produced, that they always end with death, prison or worse. Do whatever you can to encourage a bright future or building a bright future with your teen, either through work, outside activities, college plans, etc. Teens with little free time will find less time to get into trouble.

like the other person said, take them to a prison and let them know about gang life from a real gang member who's behind bars. i think there's a program that the county or state provides on stuff like thta, just maybe get a hold of somebody at a police station or maybe a social worker. I've never really had to deal with stuff like that cause i grew up a long time ago.

Not specifically about gangs, but a number of years ago there was a movie called "Scared Straight" - see if you can find it and rent it. It's about a program in which young offenders went into a prison and got a good talking-to from some lifers:

I don't know if such a program is still being run; do a little looking around.

Good luck!

Could try just taking them to prison to show them there possible future. Have them meet and talk to prisoners that used to be in gangs or commited ganglike crimes.

go to www.streetgangs.com and it offers a vast array of info to help you. and call the local police department and tell them your thoughts on the matter and they love to help out by scaring the cuss out of young people with real pictures and stories. pluss they are real good at interrogation type stuff which intimidates a kid . the ujniform helps too. hey good luck and god bless

Yeah, call the cops. Unfortunately many parents today will not turn their children in. And if they get arrested for something-the dumb parents go and bail them out instead of letting them pay for their crime.
Young people will never take law (right and wrong) seriously, if their parents don't either.
