Can someone help me to understand? If I have a box that is 3x5x21, which numbers are the lenght, width and depth?

My guess would be that 21 is the length but I'm unsure about the other two numbers. Help please?

The usual convention will be Length, Width and Height.
Depending on who you received the dimensions from it could be anything.

There is not a hard and fast rule. Most people would say that the largest dimension is length, and some would say that the second largest is depth while the smallest is width. Some might reverse the last two. Some might prefer to call the smallest dimension "thickness," or to call one of the dimensions "height" rather than depth. In other situations, the relative size is not important, but the orientation is. For example, the depth or height might be the dimension in the up-and-down direction, whether it is the largest or smallest dimension.

it is a simple formula. (Length x width)x depth. this gives you the cubic feet. there are 7.5 gallons per cubic foot. I am 90 percent sure this is right. It has been a while since college, but I am almost positive this is right. A pool 10 foot by 4 foot that is 3 foot deep holds... 10x4= 40, 40x3=102 120x7.5= 900 gallons. I hope this helps.

my teacher always says it goes like length x width x height(or depth)..its the standard.

in that order
3=L
5=W
21=H
however the other convention(wrong of course) is to take the largest value as the length,next as the width and the smallest as the height

There is no accepted convention.
It has to be clearly specified.
We cannot say for sure whether
5 is depth or 3

If the problem does not specify, either one can be all three
L*W*H
21*3*5
3*5*21
5*21*3
They would all give your the same volume (displacement)
