IT has a ratchet in it that is what makes it stay in position. What you are doing is making that ratchet piece click on its stops as the shade moves.

Somethings wrong with it. Take it to a mechanic or try some WD-40.

It sounds like the gear mechanism has slipped or is stripped

Let's see here.....try not rolling it up all the way anymore, I can almost guarantee that will fix it. Good Luck . (My arm hurts really really bad when I twist it like this..........well honey, don't twist it like that!)
