Until I came on this board, I'd never heard of a guinea pig living anywhere BUT inside.

I have an indoor rabbit, but I've never had guinea pigs. As long as you keep the cage clean and have one that's big enough, I can't imagine the odor would be any worse than any other rodent pet. (We also have a hamster who has almost no odor even though my daughter doesn't clean the cage as often as she should)

Not sure how easy pigs are to litterbox train, but most rodents typically urinate in one spot in their cage. Once your pig picks his spot... but a litterbox there. They make special boxes for rabbits, ferrets, etc... with one low side and three high ones (made to go in a corner)... my rabbit uses his consistently and even our hamster is pretty good about using his.

Anyway... there's lots of great cages out there... but there's also a lot that aren't. Look for something as large as you have room for. Multiple stories is a plus (since it creates more room without needing a larger cage). Building a cage is always an option - that's what I did with my bunny. Good luck! I've heard pigs make great pets.

Keeping a guinea pig outside isn't bad. However, you have to take care of it really well if it's outside. If it's hot, make sure that there are ways that your guinea pig can cool down and that it has a lot of water. If it's cold, find something to cover the cage up so that the heat is trapped inside the cage. I wouldn't recommend keeping your guinea pig inside the house because when it poops, it will smell really bad. Otherwise, it's not bad. All you just have to do is make sure that your guinea pig is well taken cared of and that anything hazardous is away from it.

Guinea pigs are best living inside. They become friendlier, live longer (too much heat and too much cold can kill!) and are just generally happier. Read more here http://guineapigcages.com/location.htm

I have had them in my room before, but right now (because I have 10) I have them in a big heated shed which is the second best option.

I know guinea pigs where once known as outside animals but more owners are realising about how un-ideal it is and it is becoming popular to keep them inside. After all, they are pets and they should be treated like part of the family. If I could, I would have all 10 in my room, but I don't have enough space and the parents wouldn't let me!

Guinea pigs do well indoors, however many people do not enjoy the odor of the cage. They are a great house pet if you like small rodents, rats can be good pets too, they smell a lot like the pig. Keep fresh water handy, clean the cage often, and remember they can get lonely so maybe get two.

www.cavycages.com has a TON of info on pigs to get you started. These cheap, homemade cages are great for your pigs and your wallet, and the materials are easily found. Mine is about 3x6 foot and cost me $30 to make, my two girl pigs have been living there for 3 years. They love the space.

I'd avoid having your pig in your room- rather, put them in a spot where people will be walking by during the day so they can say hi to your pig and give it attention.

I have a guinea pig rescue, we keep all of ours inside, I have heard of people keeping them outside, but this is a no,no. as for exercise, all they need is about 30 minutes a day of supervised floor time. But the more time you send with them the better,

My boys keep their GP in their room. If you scoop the poop every day, add a handful of fresh litter and fully clean the cage once a week, there will be no odor.

Get the GP the biggest cage you can fit/afford. Ours is 2X3 feet and 2 1/2 feet high. It has three levels and lots of hiding places. His house is a cavy hut, just a little wodden box really.

Every day we cut up fresh veggies, like carrots or apples and hide the little pieces all over the cage. GPs are rummagers in the wild so they like to forage for their food and this keeps him well excercised.

Just remember in South America they eat them, so if there is ever a natural disaster...

Well, you need to makesure you get them out about twice daily for 30 min at a time. This will let their energy out. You can get an excercise pin for them to run around in.(you can use this inside or out.) They get big, so make sure the cage is big enough for them. At least 2 levels would be recommended & this will give more exercise also. You also have to make sure you keep their cage clean because their waste stinks bad. They normally go in one area, so you can keep a cat scoop handy to scoop the cage every day. :o)
