NEVER!

Well, Lincoln was actually the one who began their decline to corruption and business before citizen mentality.

Lincoln created the income tax, where none had existed before.
Lincoln wielded more federal power over the states than any president before.
Lincoln allowed the war to begin in an effrot to solidify a strong central govt.

Lincoln is NOT a good example of what Republicans should be emulating.

BUT, if Republicans truly were for smaller govt, less intrusion in private lives, lower taxes, etc. then YES, wholeheartedly I would support them.

Unfortunately, govt grows tremendously under every Republican president (look it up), taxes are "lowered" in token public displays and then surreptitiously raised elsewhere, and the party invades our personal lives at every turn (gay sex, marriage, family planning, etc.)

So, to your exact question... no.

Yes absolutely. Anyone who has done serious study of early Republicanism and Lincoln himself would see that the party is just what America needs right now. I think alot of the problem stems from the GOP being overtaken by the evangelicals and fundamentalists, turning them social conservative, and not just economically conservative.

I am a Republican, in case that matters at all

The republicans of Lincoln's time are now referred to as democratic republicans because of how the party doesn't represent the same values as the ones they represented previously , the same for democrats , the ones before are being called " dixie crats " .

ME. This is the cure to the problem. Did you see the exit polls that showed Americans by 11% think the Republicans are the big government party over the Democrats.

Lincoln lied and was involved in scandals too. He was a Lawyer before he was a Politician too. Politics is not a place for principles.

Do you really think they would really sell all their investments in Oil and Defence companies that have been making bumper profits because of their fear psychosis policies lately and return to Lincoln's principles?

Lincoln never had oil and big business. The world is now a big business, that's just the way it is now and there is no going back.
