They don't go off automatically. They go off by coincidence. Street lights are not perfect. Some of them flicker on and off throughout the night, and this happens whether or not you are nearby. But when a light coincidentally goes off as you get close to it, you notice because it suddenly gets dark, and you think it happens disproportionately often. You just don't notice the many times you approach a street light and it doesn't go off.

Your entirely electric personality must be jamming the mercury's charge. You should be careful around heavy machinery.
