Can you set up a computer to only allow selected websites to be viewed? Say I want my kids to only be able to go to 10 different sites, tutoring sites, but not to be able to surf the internet. How do you do that?
(I'm not awful, they are grounded by the way)

netnanny.com and if they are grounded you should take the computer away outright.

lol Yes'm you can.

The following will describe how to enable the features
you specified for Internet Explorer.

If you use FireFox then I'm sorry to announce that I'm not
aware of any content locks for FireFox. I've been using it
ever since it came out, but never found that feature.

Internet Explorer:
1.) Open IE (Internet Explorer)
2.) Goto the top and select Tools then Internet Options
3.) Goto the Content Tab and enable Content Advisor
4.) For the rating put it on level 4
5.) Goto the Approved Sites Tab and enter the 10 website
urls. In Example:
http://www.google.com
http://www.msn.com
etc. etc.

6.) Goto the General Tab and for User Options
make sure [ ] Users can see sites that have no rating
is not selected. and [X] Supervisor can type a password
to allow users to view restricted content is selected.

7.) On that same Tab goto Supervisor Password and
set a password.

8.) Click Apply then OK and try it out.
If you have any questions about these steps please email
me at void_3e01@yahoo.com for more information on the
subject.

Could it be done? Sure

Is it complicated? If you want it to actually work, it can be.

Unfortunately there are so many ways to get around blocks it's not funny. The good thing is you have 10 specific sites you want them to access. I could set up a firewall which would block everything except web access to those 10 specific sites. And I mean everything :)

For many of us professional geeks :) it'd be easy. It's not that easy for the normal internet user though.

You might check out your router if you have one. Many of them have blocking capabilities built in. You can also try to configure your Windows (assuming windows) firewall but if you're not familiar with that, I wouldn't recommend it.

Best bet would be to contact a local computer consultant and see what it'd take to put blocks in.
