My guess would be because it ia a conditionary word. There is no exact meaning for the word "if". If can be followed by virtually any statement.

In a sentence, everything can turn on that little word, IF!

You can have a hot fudge sundae IF you clean your room.

I will pay for you to go to college IF you show me that you are a serious student.

I will marry you IF you make $100,000 a year.

If is the word that tells you how to do things. When you ask for directions to do anything from another person, they always start by saying "If you---". LOL
