did they just look over the top to shoot or have a cleverly placed periscope attached to the gun to see over the trenches threat free?

They did use periscope rifles in the Great War.

A periscope attached to a rifle and the trigger was tied to a piece of string. They placed the rifles on the bank and with the mirrors, they aimed at the enemy.

It wasn't that easy to aim and I'm not sure it was as effective as they thought due to inaccuracies, but there were periscope rifles.

It was invented in 1915 by an Australian and used by the ANZAC forces.

Yes, they did use periscope guns. I don't think that it was factory made but I've seen some pictures of different models.

At this moment the only picture I found seems not very usefull (recoil will throw the gun almost over his head) but I've seen other models with a complete wooden frame where the gun was well fixed in it and the whole cradle fixed on the trench wall (like for a machine gun post). With a lot of fine-tuning is could have worked since every was stable and the recoil was taken by the frame. It needed a fixed place and was not much mobile.

A few guys might have tried this - after all they spent a lot of time in the trenches and there wasn't much to do most of the time. So I'm sure a few inventive guys tried it with home-made rigs, but it wasnt an official policy. They didn't manufacture any models of rifle for this that I've ever seen or heard of.

There were lots of trench periscopes. I have a really nice German one that my grandfather brought back from France in 1919. It has really good optics and a fancy rangefinding attachment.

Looked over the top, while standing on a slightly higher than floor
ledge. Well there wasnt a floor as mostly a mud pool!

Periscopes were used for surveliance only, in forward dug trenches!!

This is where the 3rd light off of a match is considered unlucky.

The first light (the match & first smoker) drew the shooters attention,

The second cigarette to be lit (From original flame)
allowed for aiming etc.

Whomever got the THIRD light was SHOT! (Mostly!)

I know they used to use periscopes to see over the trenches. the enemy snipers would shoot the periscopes the moment they came into the clear.

Pretty sure they had periscopes for observation, but haven't heard of them as gun attachments.

They had periscope binoculars, but they did not, as far as I know, have guns attached to them.

Any good?
