Here is a fair and succinct bio that discusses his place in the enlightenment movement.

Locke is a pretty tough read, but worth wading through. There is a complex but careful phrasing that shows logical thought that is almost incomprehensible in today's thinking. But Locke and Immanuel Kant are two tremendously important thinkers that moved western civilization from the combined scholastic nonsense and mysticism that reigned in thought before hand. There was an important crowd of others but Locke is one of those beams one lays across the floor to keep everything else supported and straight and level.
