I had a eight gallon milk can which I welded the top on and fitted a brass connector for 1/4 inch copper pipe and a two inch steel plug for funneling in the mash. I ran about 6 feet of copper pipe from the connector around a coffee can. Using a propane stove as heat and sitting it next to a double sink in my basement, the pipe ran to nearest sink filled with cold water whick cooled the can with the pipe wrapped around it. The end of the pipe dripped the shine into a container in the other sink - Hic :-)

Get a large pyrex flask, they are used in labs and they have two openings covered by corks. One for the steam to go trough and the other for a thermometer.
Drill a hole on the top cork for the serpentine, and a hole in the lower cork for the thermometer.
To make the serpentine get a long glass tubing and with a blow thorch shape it in a spiral being careful not to crease it.
Put the flask on the stove and regulate the heath to get the right temperature(boiling point of alchohol) and collect the condensed liquid at the end of the serpentine.
Stay away from copper ,the solder of the jonts will contaminate the liquid and kill you.

I read a while back about folks using old hot water heaters. Looked pretty good, too. Google that and check it out.

Say, some of my friends sitting around here are from the ATF, they're like some names and addresses, if you don't mind.
