Everybody should ask that question; it is a natural tendency that even a pagan like Aristotle observed, "All men by nature desire knowledge." It really isn't a religious question, it is a question about reality, the study of Metaphysics. Yes, "religious" people may ask it, but I don't believe that it is foremost on their mind. Most "religious" people are as confused as the non-religious. Anyway, religion doesn't change people's thinking, but a relationship with living God does. Jesus is in the business of changing lives radically, in particular mine. "If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation, old things are past away, behold all things are new." 2 Corinthians 5:17

Most people I know that are religious have other questions to get some one interested in a conversation about religion. I have seen that question posted several time though.

Religious people don't ask questions because they think they already know all the answers - the best they can manage is a statement with a question mark at the end

Sure, some religious people ask that queston! Most of them live in constant fear of their answer too! Therefore, they strive each and evey day to fulfill what they believe is the meaning of their life.
Many Oriental religions believe that there is not much meaning to this life, except to become one with the "Great Empty Circle" (reference primarily Buddhist). So they spend many hours and even days in meditation and in monasteries.
Tribal religions think that they exist on earth only to please their gods. So they will live life focused on this: they will make war in their honor, have feasts in their name, and make sacrifices - sometimes even human sacrifices - to please their gods. So they devote their lives religiously to this.
Western Religions believe that the meaning of life is to earn the grace of God. So they attempt to do so by religious ritual and self-effacing acts. They make charitable contributions. They try to live for others. They go through all the religious loops trying to fulfill their "purpose."
All these religions, as I have stated, live in constant fear toward the answer to their question "What is the meaning of life?" What if they are wrong?! They would have no meaning to their life.
The only way to truly know the meaning of life is to get ti from the One Who created life. He has one purpose for our life: He wants us to have a true, living, vibrant relationship with Him, therby bringing honor to His Name. Jesus Christ sacrificed His own life 2,000 some years ago to give us an opportunity to have a relationship with Him.
If you want to know more about this true meaning of life, find a Bible and read the Book of John the Apostle. It is an account of the life of Jesus Christ on this earth. Read it with a willing and open mind, and you will find the true meaning of life. Jesus said in John 10:10, "I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly."

Generally not. They prefer to be told the meaning of life by their religious leaders or Holy Books. It's much easier than having to think for themselves. :P
