I was recently out near one of my backyard ponds and noticed wrapped around a large branch underwater, there was a clump of black specs. I have about 10 goldfish in there and I know that their eggs tend to be opaque or pearl looking? What are these black things that look like eggs?

I fear that you may have contracted toads (or frogs). Are the specks about the size of a small pea, with a black center surrounded by a clear jellylike mass? If its IS frogs (or toads) your goldfish will doubtless enjoy a tadpole snack shortly. If they are truly tiny, it could be snails.

Frog eggs, most likely.
