We are limited by our capacity to perceive and it appears to us that we live in a three-dimensional universe - with time as a fourth non-physical dimension. Reality may be otherwise but we are, thus far, incapable of perceiving it.

If we look along a flat surface at eye level we would not see a shadow (two dimensional) cast upon that surface - yet the shadow certainly exists and can be seen if we raise our eye level and look down on it. Yes, a shadow is not an object as such but that is because we define everything in three dimensions.

If a being existed that could only perceive two-dimensions they would know nothing of height. If a three-dimensional object passed through their perception plane it would be 'seen' in two-dimensional slices (like looking at the edge of a shadow to us). This two-dimensional being would be certain that we three-dimensional creatures did not exist.

This is one of the most difficult questions in physics, why is "ordinary " spacetime limited to x, y, z, and t? No one really knows the answer, but some propose that it's related to the fact that topologically-speaking, 3 dimensions seems to be the most complex. Only recently, for example, "Poincare's conjecture" about 3-D objects have been proven, long after the same question for higher dimensions had already been answered. Maybe reality just naturally drifts to that world with "the most space to move around in"?

Who says "we" are? You're only limited by how you think and what you believe.
