Kobe changed his number for this season b/c he views this year as the start to his career. He said that in his prior seasons, he didn't appreciate his life and career as much as he now does. With this new perspective, he decided to change from '8' to '24'. It may not make sense to the public, but this is what he said on an ESPN interview a few weeks back.

I know that the number 24 was the number he wore in high school. It also has to do with a contract dispute with, I think Nike.

He wants to wear the number he wore in high school which was 24. He anounced it last year during the playoffs. Seriously you need to start watching ESPN more. me I watch it every day.
