The catalytic converter is the cause of the smell. When the exhaust goes through the catalyst, it comes out smelling bad. Some smell a lot about battery acid, some like rotten eggs, depending on the catalyst used. When it ceases to stink, the catalyst is no linger doing its job and the converter needs changing.

It must be really bad if it caused you to root it out and ended in sniffing a tail pipe. Is there a lot of black in this area, carburater and airfilter problems. Do you use the cheapest gas everytime and no octane boosts? Is it possible you got pranked with the egg up the shoot? In any case, not normal. Consider having a mechanic look into this.

You car might be burning oil. This is a bad sign. Have the engine checked by a mechanic. Another possibility is that there was cheap gas used in this car previously and the fuel system is dirty. In any event, take it to have it checked.
