Because people have a need to feel that there is someone out there who is good and just and will take care of them. There are so many "bad guys" in the world, we need to believe that there are "good guys" out there who will win in the end. That's just human nature and applies to all civilizations.

The human psyche is setup to learn through emulation.
(For example, we learn to speak by trying to emulate the sounds that we hear coming from the mouths of other people.)

Before we emulate something, we first judge the worthiness of that which we might emulate, to see if it is something which we desire, and if so, we want a prime example for which to emulate.

Hero's are those people who seem to have a characteristic that others find to be a prime example for which they perceive all should want to emulate. The reason for this innate connection might in part, be based on the notion that the characteristic is so prime, that it may not be possible to emulate, and thus is something special.

Look at how quickly someone can fall from 'hero' status when those who hold them to such high esteem discover that they are just like everyone else, and prone to making the same mistakes as any human being.
