I am a nurse working on the night shift. I often see people sleeping with their eyes open on my hourly rounds. It really creeps me out! Sleeping with eyes open would dry eyes out terribly and corneal abrasions would probably occur. Not a silly question. You might also post it in the health forum.

It's easier to get to sleep with as few stimuli as possible - you probably couldn't sleep if it was noisy. By closing your eyes you cut off visual stimulus to your brain.

Dark. Dark make sleeping better.
However, Dragon sleeps with one eye open to better protect her treasure from nasty thiefses.

Because if your eyes were open, and you were sleeping, you wouldn't be blinking! And then you would get dust and whatever else in your eyes!

It is so nothing can get into the eyes. Your eyelids are to protect your eyes. It is so nothing can poke it while your sleeping.

to keep them from drying out, if you have ever seen a person who sleeps with their eyes open, they do not blink when asleep.
